Struggling To Be Heard

Sociology student, mother of 5 cats, music lover, food enthusiast, mixed Black girl, natural hair lover, genderfluid, queer, anti-capitalist and prison abolitionist. Ask if you want to know more.

Here is some info about my pronouns.

I'm here to rant, rave, repost pictures and info, dissect little and big things, bitch, moan, laugh, cry. Stuff. I love getting questions. You'll find things on black history, race in America, dissecting white supremacy, the prison industrial complex, some American politics stuff, gender and feminist issues. Pictures of all kinds of beautiful people, food, cats, and you will definitely get randomly bombarded with anime shots. I also post personal posts about my life, my emotions, and relationships, which can include lots of emotions so forewarning.

come on up to the house: Unpaid Interns: Real World Work Or Just Free Labor?

newmodelminority:

Over 1 million Americans a year work as interns. About half of them are unpaid.

Alex Footman was among them, until recently. He worked as an unpaid intern for Black Swan, a film that won numerous awards and grossed over $300 million.

So many people who have unpaid internships also aren’t getting any real life experience. Fetching documents, making coffee, and kissing ass, though it needs to be done in real life, does nothing to add actual skills for a potential future job. Busy work can be done by anyone but since these companies don’t portray their internship as such, they get trapped. It’s not cool. I had an unpaid practicum, but it was worth it because I know it gave me real experience and I was responsible for putting together my responsibilities and schedule. However, too many people get screwed. I’d be mad as hell like this dude if I worked on a project that grossed millions, unpaid, when I’m a student trying hard to survive.
